Project Management Certification

If you are considering advancing your career, project management certification might be the right choice for you. There are a number of certifications available in the Project Management (PM) field, although the most important one is, unquestionably, the PMP certification. To earn these credentials candidates must meet specific requirements and spend significant time on preparation for the exams. However, the benefits of acquiring such recognized certifications, especially in terms of salary increases, greatly outweigh the cost of preparation.

The PMP (Project Management Professional) certification is one of the most intensive project management certifications available and is offered by The Project Management Institute (PMI), a leading professional association in project management which administers a globally recognized, examination-based, professional certification program. This advanced certification demonstrates advanced knowledge of and experience with project management concepts.

Since qualifications and testing are fairly rigorous, the PMP certification aims at project management professionals with extensive experience and is probably the most widely respected project management certification today. The PMP experience and exam requirements focus on five process groups: Initiating, Planning, Executing, Controlling, and Closing. The exam itself consists of 200 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 4 hours.

Candidates who successfully pass this project management certification exam must maintain continuing certification requirements consisting of 60 Professional Development Units (PDU). Typically, one PDU is earned for every hour spent in a planned and structured learning experience or activity.

Some other recognized project management certifications are CPM (Certified Project Manager) Certification, IT Project Manager Certification, and Advanced PM certification, among others.
